Amid coronavirus, Las Vegas hedging its bets on esports by Arash Markazi of the Los Angeles Times

“Some Las Vegas sportsbooks will be back in business this week, opening their apps for wagering for the first time since mid-March, when they were shut down by the COVID-19 pandemic. One, Circa Sports, is even offering curbside service at the Golden Gate Hotel & Casino, helping customers sign up for mobile accounts and deposit funds while practicing social distancing. The timing coincides with the return of UFC this weekend and NASCAR racing the next.

In late April, International Gaming Technology (IGT) signed an agreement to power Circa Sports’ PlaySports mobile sports betting app in Colorado. That followed Circa’s launch plans for the app earlier in the year in partnership with Century Casinos (CNTY). ‘We look forward to introducing patrons and sports fans in Colorado to the excitement of Vegas-style sports betting through the Circa Sports Colorado app,’ said Derek Stevens, CEO of Nevada-based Circa Sports.

At Circa, customers were able to pull up to the valet area at the Golden Gate in downtown Vegas. Employees are practicing social distancing guidelines, with workers who directly interact with customers wearing masks. While customers could pay with cash, Circa employees cannot give out cash for security and regulatory reasons. Customers who bring in winning or canceled bets will have their winnings or bet amount applied to their mobile accounts.

Curbside Mobile Signups Provide Respite For Sports Bettors Thirsting For Action by Matt Rybaltowski of Sports Handle

Circa Sports, which operates two locations in Downtown Las Vegas, launched the curbside program May 7 outside the Golden Gate Hotel & Casino on Fremont Street to give customers ample opportunity to place their wagers before the well-publicized UFC event two nights later. Over the three-day period, Circa Sports, a relative newcomer to the Vegas sportsbook scene, booked approximately 120 account signups or deposits, Circa Sportsbook Operations Manager Jeffrey Benson told Sports Handle. Every retail sportsbook in Nevada has remained temporarily shuttered following an order from Sisolak in mid-March that resulted in the closure of licensed casinos across the state.

Last month, Circa Sports launched a digital payment solutions technology that enables customers to load funds onto Circa’s mobile app through the Play+ functionality. The curbside program gave patrons an alternative for digital transfers beyond Play+. ‘Given what has been going on, it allowed new players access to our app and to our mobile offerings,’ Benson said. ‘It provided patrons who already have the app with the functionality to do so without the Play+ feature.’

NASCAR’s back at Darlington by Micah Roberts of Gaming Today

“‘We’re excited to see the two (Cup) races within a few days at one of NASCAR’s premier tracks,’ said Circa Sports director Matt Metcalf. ‘It should be amazing to see them run Sunday and then apply what they’ve learned on the quick turnaround that week.’
